Luca Gotti insisted that his side held their own against Roma despite slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the capital on Thursday night.

“Roma started well, creating danger and making changes, but I think we stayed compact and reacted after that,” he said, speaking after the game. “We conceded the goal in the same passage of play that we had had a chance to take the lead, but the lads deserve credit for staying in the game until the end.”

The result means Udinese have now lost their last two Serie A matches, but Gotti stressed that there were many more positives to be taken from Thursday’s match.

“It was a very different game to the Napoli match,” said Gotti. “We matched them for much of it and had chances to score, but unfortunately we didn’t take them. I think the club is set up to have a bright future. We have several very young players with great potential, so now we need to try to get the best out of them. It’s never nice to lose and it’s not a habit we want to get into, but now we have two days to prepare for another match against a good side.”
