Here’s what the Brazilian had to say

The Udinese centre-back discussed a range of topics on Monday evening

“We’ve been preparing as well as possible during the training camp. The coach was talking to us today about how we have to keep working hard and let our performances on the pitch do the talking.

“We’re pleased to listen to what the boss has to say and we know that’s the way to go. We have to keep doing that and we’ll be able to achieve our goal of avoiding relegation; then we can aim for even bigger targets. The coach is starting to put his mentality into practice. It’s important for the new players to understand what’s being asked of them.

“I’ve been in Udine for six years now and I’m very pleased about that. My family is used to the area and my children were born here. The longest-standing players have to set an example for the new arrivals and for those coming up from the youth ranks.

“I’m happy to be one of the standard-bearers in the squad and I hope to contribute to the team as much as possible. I’ve also scored seven goals during my six years here, but I’m hoping to score at least three more next campaign.

“We could’ve made more from our set-pieces last season, so that’s something we’re still working hard to improve.

“[Destiny] Udogie is a good player and he’s handling himself well. I’m sure he’ll quickly understand what the coach expects from him and what the team needs. I think he’ll improve as the campaign wears on and he’ll be a big help to us over the course of the season.

“The coach is waiting until the end of the transfer window to put his ideas into practice. At the moment we’re working on a defensive structure with a back three, as it’s the only system which we’re currently confident with.

“We’d never previously played with a back four, but I think it might happen before the end of the transfer window. I want to help the team regardless of whether I play as a winger or a full-back. I feel that I’m a versatile player which I think is useful to the coach as he can change our formation during games if needed.

“I’d be very proud to wear the captain’s armband, but that’s a decision for the club and the coach. It’s my duty to try to be a leader on and off the pitch.”
