Udinese Calcio have teamed up with UNHCR - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN agency mandated to aid and protect refugees, to provide support to displaced people from Afghanistan.

Following Serie A Matchday 26 in which all clubs of the Italian top flight gave their backing in the ‘Afghanistan emergency: let's not abandon them’ fundraising campaign, Udinese are putting 20 signed shirts up for auction on Charity Stars from Monday 21 February. Money raised will go towards supplying refugees with basic necessities such as blankets, thermal insulation kits for emergency accommodation, and solar-powered lamps.

This initiative, which is launched today alongside a similar project by Lazio, follows in the footsteps of those carried out at the start of the season by Roma and Sampdoria. Other clubs are expected to join in the fight and have responded to the Challenge launched by UNHCR to counter the ongoing emergency in Afghanistan where, in the last year alone, over 700,000 people have had to flee their homes. The emergency has taken its greatest toll on women and children; 80% of those displaced fall into that demographic. They are fleeing violence and armed conflict which has seen the country suffer immesurably over the last 40 years. The harsh Afghan winter, with temperatures that can reach -12°c, has exacerbated an already dire situation.

While this auction is targeted at Udinese fans anyone who wishes to contribute can do so at: www.charitystarts.com/udinewww.charitystars.com/udinesechallenge4unhcr to help to alleviate the situation in Afghanistan.
