On this day: Udinese beat Juventus 1-0

Bierhoff scored the winner against the Old Lady on 5 November 1995

On 5 November 1995, Alberto Zaccheroni’s Udinese got the better of Juventus for the first time in 33 years. The memorable result was secured at the Stadio Friuli in front of 35,000 raucous supporters.

Udinese were better organised, showed more desire and battled harder than Marcello Lippi’s side and deservedly came out on top.

Oliver Bierhoff grabbed the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute when the ball fell to him inside the six-yard box after a wayward save by Michelangelo Rampulla, a second-half substitute in place of the injured Angelo Peruzzi in goal for the visitors.

The triumph showed that Udinese could go toe-to-toe with the big boys despite having clinched promotion to Serie A during the previous campaign. At the end of the 1995/96 season, Zaccheroni’s side had amassed 41 points and secured an 11th-placed finish, although the boss felt that a UEFA Cup berth was there for the taking once safety had been secured.

Here's the line-up against Juventus: Battistini, Helveg, Calori, Bia, Sergio (Manni 58); Ametrano (Ripa 90), Rossitto, Desideri, Kozminski; Poggi, Bierhoff (Bertotto 79).
