On 11 June 1981, Udinese Primavera were crowned champions of Italy despite losing 1-0 away to Roma, having beaten the Giallorossi 2-0 in Udine four days earlier.
It was the first league title for Udinese U19s in its modern guise, although they previously won the league in 1963/64, when there was a group format with separate Serie A and Serie B finals.
The young Zebrette – coached at the start of the season by Enzo Ferrari and later by Paride Tumburus (after Ferrari's promotion to the first team) – dominated the regular season, then coasted through a semi-final group that included Como, SPAL and Juventus.
In the first leg of the final, played on 7 June before a crowd of 10,000 at the Stadio Friuli, goals by Maurizio Trombetta and Giovanni Koetting secured a 2-0 win.
The return leg was played in a hostile atmosphere at the Stadio Tre Fontane but after going a goal down on the day, Tumburus's men managed to hold on to claim a historic Scudetto title.
