On 22 August 2000 a Roberto Sosa brace in extra time saw Udinese defeat Czech outfit Sigma Olomouc in the Intertoto Cup final to claim a piece of European silverware and qualify for the UEFA Cup.
Luigi De Canio's side went into the second leg at the Stadio Friuli having earned a 2-2 draw in the Czech Republic on 8 August, meaning they needed to win or draw 0-0 or 1-1 to progress. They had previously beaten Aalborg and Austria to reach the final.
Sigma were the better team in the first half and took the lead through Pavel Hapal shortly before the interval. Udinese made lots of mistakes and didn't seem capable of finding a way through the Czechs' defensive wall.
When Roberto Muzzi scored a header two minutes before full time it looked as though De Canio's side had done enough. However, the hearts of the 25,000-strong crowd sank soon after as Josef Mucha scored what would have been a trophy-winning goal for Sigma. Fortunately, just 60 seconds later, a Massimo Margiotta-forced own goal by Tomas Ujfalusi restored parity once again and sent the tie to extra time.
Udinese's task was made harder when Muzzi was given his marching orders but El Pampa broke the visitors' resilience with a goal in each of the 15-minute halves to secure the Intertoto Cup for Udinese – the club's first victory in a UEFA-organised competition.
That triumph was Udinese's ticket to the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, where they eliminated Polonia Warsaw before succumbing to PAOK in extra time in the second round.
