On this day | Zico's Udinese debut

The Brazil legend bagged a brace in a 5-0 win over Genoa on his Serie A bow in 1983

Exactly 42 years have passed since Zico made his first appearance in Serie A – and did so in style.

It was a historic moment as one of the world's greatest players chose to don the jersey of a 'small' club like Udinese, giving the fans a real reason to dream.

After a turbulent summer in which the transfer risked falling through – leading to a popular uprising known as 'Zico or Austria' – on 11 September 1983 the Brazil star lined up with his new team-mates for the opening game of the season, away to Genoa.

The Stadio Luigi Ferraris was packed with a crowd of almost 40,000, many of whom had come along to admire Zico. They weren't disappointed.

The Brazilian opened his Udinese account in the first half before placing a wonderful free kick into the top corner just before full time – Udinese's fifth of the day.

He went on to score 17 goals in his maiden season in Italy, finishing second only to Michel Platini in the top scorers' chart, despite being sidelined with injury for five matches.

His absence proved to be a blow for Udinese's hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Cup as they ended the season in ninth place.

Zico remained in Friuli for the 1984/85 season but injury problems meant he only made 16 appearances, scoring three goals. At the end of the year he returned to Flamengo, ending a memorable two-year spell for Udinese.
