Kamara and Zanetti mull over Venezia defeat

Wing-back and coach discuss the match and Udinese's current situation

After Friday's game at Venezia, Hassane Kamara and Paolo Zanetti addressed the media in the press room.

Kamara: “We've let in 25 goals so it's always difficult when we concede one now. We went behind, got ourselves level again then fell behind again. It was tough. We have to find the strength to lift our heads, talk little and keep working away.

“Having started the season aiming high, to now find ourselves bottom of the league is a difficult situation to manage but that's football. We still have 27 games to play. We shouldn't think about it too much. Right now we're here and the only thing that matters is we get out of it. We're capable of doing that.

“The new coach has had two or three days to work with us and we've looked at tactics and worked on a few things but it takes time. It doesn't all depend on the coach. He's trying to inject energy and new ideas but it's the players who go out on the pitch and we have to help the coach get the team out of this situation.”

Zanetti: “The team didn't go out there with the wrong attitude. We struggled with the match tempo. We were pressing late. We have to up the intensity and get it to a much higher level than this. We have quality and physical attributes but we don't look that sharp. We need to work on the psychological side too.

“At times the team is a bit scared and we make technical mistakes that are hard to accept for a team like ours. That shows the team are struggling but we have what we need to improve. We've hit rock bottom today and that has to make us humble but we also need to restore confidence and work hard.

“[Keinan] Davis did well today and had several chances, then we conceded a goal in the top corner.

“We must stay calm and clear-headed and believe in these players. We have fans who get behind us till the final whistle and they'll always do that but we must do more.

“Until they scored their second goal we didn't deserve to lose, let's be honest. We probably should have made more of our chances and given away fewer. The problem was after the second goal. We conceded a goal after a break. After that we lacked the mental and physical strength to get back in the game.

“The substitutes have to do more and do better, but the same goes for the starters. I got as much as I could out of Davis and [Oumar] Solet today. A squad like ours has to raise the bar but we certainly don't need to throw everything away. The stats say we were at least as dangerous as Venezia. We had a ten-minute spell when we were playing good football in their half, then we made simple mistakes which knocked out confidence. We played in fits and starts then dropped off at the end.

“The season doesn't end today. We wouldn't have stayed up with a win. We have everything we need to stay up. We need to up the pace and the only way to do that is through hard work. No one likes being bottom. I'm very sorry for the fans.

“Maybe we're not ready to play with more grit and determination. The first goal was bad: our pressing was slow and weak and our midfielders didn't get back quickly enough. That's a mental problem – a lack of awareness of the danger. We can't let an opposition midfielder starting from deep get into the box before us. The second goal can happen because it's an amazing shot into the top corner. We have to work harder. It's mental or it's physical – one or the other. Clearly those are the areas we need to work on.”
