Padelli: "We need a mentality shift"

The goalkeeper guests on Udinese Tonight

Our stopper Daniele Padelli featured on Udinese Tonight and gave his thoughts on a number of topics.

"[Arthur] Atta, [Nicolo] Zaniolo, [Alessandro] Zanoli and [Keinan] Davis are crucial players for us, even if those who fill in for them also give their best. Whether they play or not has a big impact on the team. Keinan was on fire recently – he was almost unstoppable. I was hoping that this would happen to him – you could tell before that he was a top player, but he’d always been held back by injuries. It’s a shame what’s happened now, but he’ll bounce back.

"Recent results and especially our match in Lecce indicate that we’re not hitting the nail on the head. We performed really badly in Lecce, and on Sunday we were keen to make amends against Sassuolo. We wanted to perform better and show desire and spirit. There were positives but once they made it 2-1 we were unable to recover.

"I always say that in Serie A it’s the games against the so-called small teams that you show what you’re really made of. That’s where the difference is. We’re lacking this mental aspect to our game, but it’s not a matter of a lack of ambition. We’re all keen to make the fans and our families happy.

"We know that we have to improve. Our communication on the pitch is poor. We’re also lacking experience - everyone must stand up and be counted. There are many small things that make the difference and that we need to improve upon.

"I'm very happy with how my season has gone personally. I didn't expect to play against Lazio and I was surprised to keep my place in the team, but I was more than ready for it. As for my future, I don't know what it holds. I'm feeling good at the moment and I'm still having fun – every time I play I have a smile on my face.

"[Lennon] Miller reminds me a lot of Atta from last season. Even when he wasn't playing we were saying what a good player Arthur was. It’s the same for Miller – he’s not very flashy but he’s playing well in Serie A, even against the big teams.

"We still have to pick up points. We must aim to be at least in the top 10, then we will see where we’re at. The idea is to climb as far as we can up the table, but competition is fierce. We’ve dropped too many points. Had we not done so things would be looking different."
