Runjaic and Karlstrom speak at post-Roma press conference

Coach and captain face the media following defeat at Bluenergy Stadium

After our home defeat to Roma, Kosta Runjaic and Jesper Karlstrom took questions from journalists in the Bluenergy Stadium press.

Runjaic: “We made too many individual mistakes. We can't concede the second goal the way we did, or that fourth goal from a corner. On the first goal [Matteo] Palma lost an individual duel. We gave away cheap goals. It was all too easy for Roma to score.

“The contest was over at half time. Obviously we did everything we could to get back in it. We scored two and might have got a third to open it up again, but overall it was a very bad night for us. My words could be misinterpreted so I won't add anything else.

“Why didn't we make any half-time substitutions? We decided to start the second half with the same players then make changes later. We were 4-0 down. Could we have injected enough intensity from the bench to change the result? Possibly, but ifs and buts don't get us very far.

“Palma gave his all but he's developing and mistakes can happen. We should have defended the fifth goal better too but we had a young player out wide and Roma exploited our mistakes.

“Venezia is going to be a difficult match. Today was our third game in a week – that's not an excuse but we have to manage our energy levels. The players gave their all today.

“We must keep working away without burying our head in the sand. There's no point talking too much. You've all seen our matches: we played well against Torino and Pamra but didn't manage to win. Today we lost because we lost the duels, but that can happen against Roma. We must all stick together. I'm very clear-headed and I think we can turn things around but it's not my decision.

“There could be a psychological element to it. We're letting in too many goals and we have to work on that. It's not easy when you lose. We weren't mature enough today and Roma made us pay. The psychological aspect is important but my players don't have a problem with their mentality.

"There might be one or two players who don't fully comprehend the situation we're in but that's not an issue with most of the squad. There are a few players who still need to adapt to Serie A and if they don't put everything into it they might not reach their full potential. The lads are all in this together and we'll give it our all to get out of this situation.”

Karlstrom: "We're disappointed. It's hard to explain why we're in this situation. We're conceding too many easy goals. We had a good feeling before the match and in the first ten minutes, then we ended up losing 5-2. We must all work together to do better and get ourselves out of this rut.”
