Runjaic and Piotrowski comment on Genoa defeat

The coach and goalscorer share their thoughts

Kosta Runjaic and Jakub Piotrowski spoke at the post-match press conference after Udinese were beaten 2-1 by Genoa on Monday.

Runjaic: “Our defending was terrible. I watched the match from above and I'm not happy with the first half. We didn't play for each other and the spark was lacking. Genoa played their game but we got our approach wrong. I can understand how the fans felt seeing the team like that. Then we gave away a silly penalty and we fell behind. If you can't win, you have to at least draw but we made mistakes and got punished by Genoa.

“The team tried in the second half but we made too many mistakes out of possession. I'm disappointed and angry. We did too little to win the game. The result hurts. Looking at the performance we clearly made some mistakes. It's not the first time we've lost a game we shouldn't have lost. Now we need to give ourselves a shake-up.

“The aim is to give everything we've got and improve with every game. We need to understand that as a team and as individuals. The players who are available must give their all and prove their worth against Napoli.

“We should never have conceded the second goal the way we did. I'm responsible for this and I'll be very direct and clear with the team. It's ok not to win sometimes but losing at home again after Bologna is definitely not ok.

“We need to improve in lots of areas. The defence is the basis for stability. I'm realistic and I know we have a lot of work to do. We missed a great opportunity to strengthen our league position. In football you must always be alert. The players have to take more responsibility too.

“We didn't play well from the start. The substitutes weren't decisive in a good or a bad way and we're all responsible – starting with myself. I expect more from [Alessandro] Zanoli. He's a good lad and a great player. We needed to make changes in the wide areas and that's why I substituted him.”

Piotrowski: “We didn't start the game well then we conceded from a mistake we made. We spoke at half time and went back out with more energy and desire to win. We created chances, scored a goal and created more chances. We need to be able to scrap more. If we'd done that on that counter-attack, we'd have got at least a point.

“It's always nice to score but it would have been better to do it in a game we won. I got a goal today and had other chances. I had more touches in the box. One of my best qualities is finding space in the area to shoot and set up team-mates, bringing energy to the team. I tried to do that in the last few games but I wasn't able to take my chances. I felt it would be my day today and I went looking for the goal.”
