Ten minutes before the break the Englishman collected Oumar Solet's pass into the box, bought himself a few yards of space with his first touch and fired low into the opposite corner of the net.
Nicolo Zaniolo had a good chance to double our lead soon after but he couldn't quite lift his chip over the keeper.
A couple of late half chances for Padova gave the crowd a bit of a scare but Kosta Runjaic's side saw out the game fairly comfortably.
