Arthur Antunes Coimbra, better known as Zico, is celebrating his 70th birthday today.

Born in Rio de Janerio on 3 March 1953, he was one of the finest footballers of the post-war period and played in 750 competitive matches scoring 516 goals during a career spanning over two decades. He spent two seasons at Udinese, from 1983 to 1985.

He made his professional debut for Flamengo in 1967 and went on to win four Brazilian league titles, a Copa Libertadores and an Intercontinental Cup with his hometown club.

After a standout year in 1979, when he scored 65 goals in 51 games, he seemed destined for Italy. Roma and AC Milan both attempted to sign him but it was Udinese who managed to land him courtesy of Franco Dal Cin's masterstroke.

The news of his signing – announced on 1 June 1983 – sent shockwaves through the world and whipped up a frenzy among Udinese fans, who bought 26,611 season tickets that year.

Initially his registration – and that of Toninho Cerezo (at Roma) – was rejected by FIGC president Federcio Sordillo, but the CONI council approved the transfer on 22 July enabling him to play in Friuli. He made 24 appearances and scored 16 goals in his maiden Serie A campaign, followed by 16 games and three goals the year after.

He was named South American footballer of the year in 1977, 1981 and 1982.

He played for Brazil at three World Cups (1978, 1982, 1986), finishing third in 1978, and earned 72 caps with 52 goals.

Happy birthday, Zico!
