Sottil: "Keen to end 2022 on a high, starting tomorrow"

The coach shares his thoughts ahead of Udinese's clash with Lecce

Andrea Sottil says the mood in the camp is fine and well as Udinese head into the final Serie A week of 2022 looking for an upturn in results. Three draws and a defeat in the last four games have curbed Udinese's run but not their enthusiasm, the coach stressed at a media conference before Friday's match against Lecce.

“We know what we're capable of. After Cremona we discussed things together as we always do – including when we win games. No one is happy when we don't win but it's all part and parcel of the game. There's a calm atmosphere in the dressing room. Confidence is high and when we play well I'm always happy.

“What I expect, what we all expect, is to improve our performance. We mustn't be obsessed about having to win as it would only add anxiety. We need to go out there calm, clear-headed and determined.”

The coach then offered his assessment of the first part of the season.

“I'm enjoying every day working with the lads, with our extraordinary owners and sporting director, [Pierpaolo] Marino. He's a very important figure for me and my staff - the whole team. It's an extremely motivating environment.

"We've done an excellent job so far, improving our football and our mentality as we've gone along. The team has built its identity one day at a time, one training session at a time.

“Everyone is really keen, first of all, to produce a great performance. We want to wrap up these last three games in style, starting tomorrow.”

Sottil also had the following to say about the visiting team, Lecce:

“[Marco] Baroni has them playing the football he wants. I've played against him before and his teams have a clear identity. I think Lecce are a very dangerous side. They have pace and are very good on the counter. I have a lot of respect for Lecce but we mustn't overestimate or underestimate them. Our minds are set on finding ways to cause problems for them.”

Friday's match at Dacia Arena will be the last home game of the calendar year – and the boss took the opportunity to praise the Udinese faithful once more.

“Our fans are so important. They carry the team with their passion. There's always an amazing atmosphere at our stadium and I'm sure we'll see the same again tomorrow. For our part, we have to do what we've done before, which is carry our fans.”
