Udogie: “We have so much quality”

The wing-back spoke on Udinese TV on Tuesday evening

While he certainly can’t be called a revelation as his talent has been on display for all to see before this season with his engine, runs, crosses, dribbles, goals and strong mentality, Destiny Udogie has played a key role in Udinese’s historic start to the season. With 19 points after eight games, leaving the club just one point off the top, the midfielder was delighted to take stock of how it’s going on Udinese Tonight on Tuesday.

“My aim is to help the team. The club has given me so much and I want us to pick up as many points as possible.”

It is no secret that this extraordinary start to the season is down to hard work. “It’s been tiring since pre-season. We all came back with the right spirit and desire to win and fight, which is exactly what we’re managing to do.

“Credit to the players for always believing. It’s down to our intense training regime in the week. We give our all in training to be ready every Sunday. This is why instead of dropping off during games, we just keep going and look to keep building on what we have. It’s also down to the mental side of things. Of course, we all want to follow the coach’s orders and do well.

“We’ve felt since the summer that we could have a great season. We have real physical and technical quality and we’re going to follow the coach’s orders throughout the season. He’s the one calling the shots and we respect him.”

Udogie also touched on the team’s ability never to give in. “This is our strength. We’re always hungry and stay focused for the 90 minutes.”

The full-back has decided to celebrate his goals this season, of which there have already been two, by pretending to go to sleep “like Steph Curry because I follow the NBA closely. I still need to set my goal target for this year which I’ll do further down the line. It’ll be an interesting battle to see who’ll score the most out of the defenders, but what matters is winning. The rest counts for very little.”

While Udogie is yet to be called up by the Italy national team despite his sterling performances, he is remaining calm. “These are technical decisions. [Roberto] Mancini hasn’t said anything to me yet, but let’s wait and see.

“We can feel there’s a happy atmosphere here and the fans are pleased, so we want to keep that positive vibe going for as long as possible. We need to get as many people to the stadium as possible. We want to go all the way. We enjoyed the derby win over Verona in the dressing room and then started to turn our attention towards Atalanta.”
