20-year-old Lazar Samardzic has some impressive statistics to his name so far this season, with two goals and two assists to his name. The player’s improvement has been clear for all to see and yet the player feels that not much has changed. “Nothing has changed since last year. The coach has confidence in me. He told me to do my talking on the pitch because I have the ability.”

Even opposition teams seem to be taking measures to thwart the German midfielder, with coaches studying the way he plays, but Samardzic isn’t fazed. “That’s normal. That’s how it works in football. I’m getting more minutes this season and I’ve already bagged two goals. I don’t feel the pressure of being analysed.”

Lazar’s development is not just backed up by the figures, but also his style of play in tactical terms, particularly in the defensive phase, as he admits himself. “I feel like more of a mezzala than last season. I’m a more complete player.”

The midfielder also looked back on the Cremonese game at the weekend and was unable to mask his disappointment. “We played well and carved out so many chances. We were just missing a goal.”

There were no fewer than 2,278 travelling supporters in Cremona, which the players certainly noticed. “The atmosphere was incredible. We could only hear our fans out on the pitch.”

Samardzic also touched upon his involvement in games this season often coming from the bench. “It’s normal for every player to want to start, but what matters to me is playing well when I’m called upon.”

“The team and I are taking it game by game and working really hard. That’s part of our mentality.”

Next up for Udinese is a home clash with Lecce on Friday evening. “It won’t be an easy game. We have to try to win and claim the three points, particularly for our fans as it’s the last home match of the year.”
