Silvestri: "Sottil is genuine. He was right to get angry"

Marco Silvestri has dissected Udinese's frustrating draw against Spezia, a result which saw Andrea Sottil vent his anger afterwards during his post-match press conference.

The goalkeeper was speaking on Udinese TV's weekly Udinese Tonight show on Monday evening.

“As the coach said yesterday, it's getting hard to keep talking about this spell we're going through without sounding like we're trying to pull the wool over people's eyes,” the 31-year-old began. “There have been so many situations and matches in which we should have done better. You pay for inexperience in Serie A. We've dropped loads of points but it's our fault, no one else's.

“The coach is an instinctive, genuine person. Him being so angry in the press conference was a reflection of his mood. He's got angry with us lots of times. We've spoken about it a lot in recent weeks and we all know we must take responsibility. Personally I'm not angry with him and if any of my team-mates took offence then they didn't understand the sense of the conference because he was right to do so after defending us for months.

“We've all made bad choices that have meant dropping points. The boss has never spoken about technical mistakes, only inexperience. I think it was right for him to do it publicly to motivate us. He believes in us and he showed it with his outburst.”

Reflecting on the two goals conceded, the goalkeeper continued: “I watched [M'Bala] Nzola's goal back lots of times after the match. He was quicker than me. Perhaps I wasn't in the best position possible but he had a clear advantage and if I'd come out straight away he could have gone round me more easily.

“On the second, [Sandi] Lovric said he wasn't able to make a clean foul and he's not the sort to make any other type of foul. We could have done lots of things better in that move but it's not right to point the finger at individuals, especially as it was a very good counter-attack by Spezia.

“We're gutted to draw because having turned it around we could have seen it out. Having said that, we've drawn the game – not lost three or four nil.”

Silvestri also commented on Udinese's late penalty appeal with the score at 2-2. “There was a penalty on Beto and I think that was a serious mistake. I don't understand why the referee didn't give it and why he didn't go over to see it again on VAR."

Finally, on the support from the Dacia Arena faithful: “The fans are spectacular. They got behind us the whole game long. There's not much we can do except keep knuckling down and believing in ourselves and the staff. I'm sure we'll manage to straighten the ship. However, I've always been reluctant to talk about European football. There are other teams that are perhaps more competitive than us.”
