Sottil: “The performance was there”

The boss reacts to the stalemate with Lecce

Udinese are among the teams to have picked up the most points from losing positions this season, with further evidence at Dacia Arena on Friday evening in the 1-1 draw with Lecce. Coach Andrea Sottil was keen to take the positives despite sharing the spoils with the visitors.

“These things happen in football and it’s not a problem. This team is showing its commitment, creating and playing well. We’ve once again taken something from the game and we’re moving up the table. All that’s missing at the moment is a win.

“On every matchday we see matches going down to the wire. We don’t need to look at anyone else. I’m not the type to look for excuses.

“It was a tense game. We lacked clear-headedness in certain situations. We created so many chances and I can only congratulate the players because they gave everything. I also congratulate the subs, who were ready for action.”

The boss was asked about the trio of Beto, Gerard Deulofeu and Isaac Success playing together for the first time: “It could be a solution in certain games. They are three very good forwards. They put together a brilliant move for our goal and could’ve scored again to make it 2-1.”

Despite the intense run of fixtures, there is no shortage of fitness in the squad, as Sottil explained. “We aren’t running low on battery. If we were, we wouldn’t be turning in these high-intensity performances. Some players haven’t been able to rest at all, so maybe that explains a lack of clear-headedness in certain situations.”
