Sottil: “We were ascendant but won’t settle”

The coach reflects on Sunday’s draw

Andrea Sottil was pleased with his team’s performance on Sunday, showing that they had the fight to come from behind to claim a big point against fellow highflyers Atalanta. “Going 2-0 down was not easy to deal with, but the lads illustrated that they’ve developed the right mentality, which is something I like to see.”

It could have been even better, with Tolgay Arslan going close late on. “It’s shame about Arslan’s final effort because I think 3-2 would have been a fair result, but it was a great game for both sides. I’m happy. When I see that the lads are still disappointed at the end of the match to have drawn after coming from behind, I see the foundations of the work we’re doing, which is always based on playing to win.”

This draw comes in the context of a game against very strong opponents. “Atalanta have a clear identity. We did very well against them. They didn’t have many chances, but we could have been more clinical ourselves. Of course, the quality of the opposition is important, but we could have been more precise in the final third.”

There were some great individual performances too, not only in the starting line-up but from the bench as well. Lazar Samardzic was one of the substitutes who shone. “He’s a fantastic player, with great quality. He’s developing a lot in all parts of the game.”

Sottil finished his analysis with a message of ambition without looking too far ahead. “We won’t ever settle. We know that we can keep challenging up top. I might seem repetitive, but we are taking it game by game.”
