Gli anni trenta e quaranta, dalla promozione in serie B ai primi anni della guerra
In 1938-39 Udinese made the long waited jump of quality. The president, Enea Caine, and the coach, Luigi Miconi, built up a well balanced team. The Friulian team ended up leading Group A in serie C with 41 points, 4 points more than notorious Treviso. In order to reach Serie B the bianconeri needed the usual play-off game. Promotion was obtained against Savona during an away-match with a 0-0 draw to the local team. Brescia (8 points) reached Serie B together with Udinese (7 points) that year. This was the winning lineup of that season: Gremese (Tonello), Ciroi, Venier (Forniz), Dianti, Gallo, Serri (Miani), Bertoli, Faini, Zorzi, (Ferigo), Tabanelli, Sdraulig ((Marini). Coach: Miconi. Now that Udinese was in Serie B some old talents came back to Udine: D'Odorico, forward, joined from Torino, and Spivach from Genoa thus giving new impulse to the club's attack together with Tabanelli. The team was trained by Payer, from Hungary, but he was soon sacked and substitued by Miconi. Udinese ended the season in the very middle of the table with 33 points.
After quite an anonimous season (1932-33) Udinese went very close to promotion to Serie B although the top scorer D'Odorico was in the meanwhile sold to Padova. The Bianconeri, after an excellent season with twenty winning matches in a row, ended up with the same points as Pisa and a play off game was again necessary. On the eve of the match against the Tuscan team something unexpected happened when president Leo Menazzi Moretti resigned after some controversies had arisen about where (first Milan and then Rome) to hold the final match. In Rome Pisa wins 3 - 1 and was promoted to Serie B.

The 1940s

During the 1940-41 season, the Friulian lineup was led by Pietro Piselli, from Livorno. He was a real athlete although he had a pag leg. The coach relied on the so called English system, a peculiar technical scheme.

Udinese played in Serie B for two more seasons. In 1941-42, Miconi was still the coach and the championship ended with Udinese finishing in 9th position; in 1942-43, they hired a new coach, Molnar, and remained at the very bottom of the table. It was Serie C again. The big mistake was not to have sacked Mornar at the right time, and Gino Bellotto, new coach at half way, had no time left to improve the team.

It is also important to add that Udinese paid for having given away to Milan some of their best players Gallo, midfielder; Zorzi, fullback; and Del Medic, left winger.
In the meantime, the war blasted and the world of football was overwhelmed, too. The footballers went back home desperately trying to avoid enrollment from the German government. Federcalcio established many "local" tournaments to avoid long and dangerous away games and Udinese was in the Friulian Group in Serie C trained by Alfredo Foni. It proved a hard year and the team carried out a very middle-of-the-road season

The 1930s

The Championship League in 1930-31 proved to be more difficult than expected also due to the financial problems of the Club. The team confirmed their place in Serie B after a hard play-off game against Lucchese both being at the very bootom of the table with only 27 points.
The game took place in Bologna and Udinese won 7 -0. Relegation to Serie C was only postponed by a year, though, when bianconeri played a poor season ending it up with 25 points, far away from the salvation area.
During the 1934-35 season Udinese once again went closer and closer to Serie B: they won their Serie C tournment with 39 points, scoring something like 62 goals, and suffering only 18. Even so, at the quadrangular play-off against Reggiana, Siena e Sanremese, Udinese and their dreams of glory, although having the team a great potential, once again crashed against bad luck. During 1935-36 season Udinese was in Serie C but their behaviour on the field was excellent: they gained the third place with 39 points behind Vicenza 40 and Venezia 42. A year later, Udinese ran the risk to be relegated but eventually won the match to the very last position (Fortitudo) and reached salvation.
